Saint Leopoldo Mandic is officially the patron saint of cancer patients

During Mass at 4 p.m. at the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padova, northern Italy, Bishop Claudio Cipolla, Bishop of the local diocese, officially announced the decision of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on the Saint Mandic is the patron saint of cancer patients, while waiting for the official feast day to honor him on May 12.

Saint Leopoldo Mandic, Croat, born in Montenegro, Capuchin, small man, spent most of his life as a priest, he was a confessor. The saint also spent a lot of time at the bedside of critically ill patients to comfort them. The saint himself suffered from esophageal cancer and died of this disease in 1942. He was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1983 and made an example of confessors.

The saint is also famous for his miracles, dozens of miracles have been recognized by the authorities, and the Mandic Temple in Padova attracts many pilgrims and many thanksgiving plaques are sent here by the faithful.

On the occasion of the 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis brought the relics of Saint Mandic and Saint Pius Pietrelcina to the Vatican for the faithful to pay homage.

The process of asking the Holy See to declare Saint Mandic the patron saint of cancer patients began in July 2016, and has already gathered 700,000 signatures, including many doctors, in support of the petition filed. to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, to consider and declare him the patron saint of cancer patients. Now the Holy See has officially published a decree on this issue.
