Ever wondered about the mysteries of the Sunday Mass Obligation for Catholics?
In this episode of The Catholic Talk Show, Ryan Scheel, Ryan Dellacrosse, and Father Rich Pagano delve into the Sunday Obligation.
They explore its significance in the lives of Catholics, the meaning of the Eucharist, and the reasons why attending Mass every Sunday is essential for maintaining a strong connection with God.
“Does God need us to go to Mass every Sunday? Nope. God doesn’t need anything. We need it. We need to go to Mass.”
At the core of the Sunday Obligation is understanding that attending Mass is not for God’s benefit, but for our own spiritual growth, a concept echoed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
“The Sunday celebration of the Lord’s Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church’s life.” (CCC 2177)
As Scheel puts it: “If you don’t have the heart of the Church’s life in you, are you truly alive in the faith?”
The Eucharist, which means “Thanksgiving” in Greek, is an integral part of the Sunday Obligation. When Catholics receive the Eucharist, they partake in the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ, allowing them to be grafted onto the tree of life and grow closer to God. Father Pagano recalled St. John Vianney’s famous expression:
“If we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy.”
However, the Sunday Obligation doesn’t mean that attending Mass on Saturday evening is a way to “cut corners.” Instead, the true purpose of the Sunday Obligation is to prioritize God in our lives and orient our actions toward Him.
“If you go on Saturday just to kind of cut corners and get in and out at the fastest Mass [you] can with the least interruption to [your] social schedule and plans, you’re missing the point.”
They also address the misconception that Catholics changed the Sabbath.
While the early Church did move the day of worship from the Sabbath (Saturday) to the Lord’s Day (Sunday), they explain the shift was rooted in Scripture and tradition.
“This is Saint Paul, this is Scripture, so anybody who challenges what you do as a Catholic–what you do as a faithful follower of Christ–it’s right here in the Scriptures.”
They also emphasize the importance of attending Mass every Sunday as a way to foster gratitude, spiritual growth, and a deeper connection with God.
They encourage everyone to prioritize the Sunday Obligation and remember the true meaning of the Eucharist, which nurtures a more joyful, faith-filled life!
“We want to see you there with your family, giving thanks to our God for the favors he bestows upon us. Let nothing interrupt the most important thing that we do!”
