Do Not Be Deceived! Countless AI Images of Pope Francis, Jesus, & Catholicism Go Viral

Over the past several days, AI images of Pope Francis, Jesus and other Catholic content went viral across social media.

Users of the artificial intelligence program Midjourney created countless graphics, resulting in widespread confusion.

One particular image originally shared on Reddit depicts Pope Francis wearing a white puffer coat. However, the image is not real. This image, along with many other images, were created using Midjourney.

Users commented on the AI-generated photo, many thinking it was genuine.

“Wait is this real or is it Midjourney?” one Twitter user said. “Either way, that papal drip is just .”

“It looks completely real other than context,” a Reddit user said. “Obviously the pope wouldn’t wear this, but it’s indistinguishable otherwise.”

Another Twitter user added, “This is scary…I’ve thought this was a real photo for days.”

The photo even fooled model and television personality Chrissy Teigen.

“I thought the pope’s puffer jacket was real and didn’t give it a second thought,” Teigen wrote. “No way am I surviving the future of technology.”

Pope Francis comments on AI technology

In a March 27 address to the ‘Minerva Dialogues,’ a group of scientists and other experts, Pope Francis discussed using AI technology responsibly. He believes that its use can positively impact “the future of humanity,” and “we cannot dismiss it.”

“At the same time,” the Holy Father added, “I am certain that this potential will be realized only if there is a constant and consistent commitment on the part of those developing these technologies to act ethically and responsibly.”
