Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was laid to rest on Jan. 5 at the Vatican.

The late pope passed away on Dec. 31, 2022 at 9:34 a.m. Rome time.

Pope Francis presided over his funeral Mass on Jan. 5 at 9:30 a.m. CET in St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican then buried his body in the Vatican crypt below St. Peter’s Basilica, also the first tomb of St. John Paul II.
