On May 5, 2020, Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to publish decrees recognizing the heroic virtues of the five Servants of God, including three priests and two lay people, of which the young The first, was a 19-year-old Italian, who died in 2009 of brain cancer.
That is the Servant of God Matteo Farina, born in Avellino, southern Italy on September 19, 1990. Raised in a Catholic family, as a child, with his parents and sister Erika, Matteo worked hard at studying the word of God, reading and living every day. At the age of 9, he read the entire Gospel according to Matthew, as a Lenten penance, and recited the Rosary daily and wished to evangelize among his peers. Matteo is gentle and cute. When quarrels arise between friends, Matteo's words help restore peace between them.
In September 2003, at the age of 13, Matteo Farina began to have symptoms, which doctors later discovered was brain cancer. Over the course of six years, Matteo underwent multiple brain surgeries and underwent chemotherapy and other treatments. Apart from his time in the hospital, Matteo continued to live the normal life of a teenager. With time, the condition gets worse; and after the third surgery, Matteo was paralyzed in his left arm and leg. He often repeats that: “We must live each day as if it were our last, but not because of sorrow for death, but rather for the joy of being ready to meet God.”
Farina passed away on April 24, 2009, surrounded by family and friends.
Also recognized by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and called Venerable, were two Italian priests, Father Francesco Caruso (1979-19510), of the Archdiocese of Catanzaaro, who died in 1951, and Father Carmelo De Palma (1876-1961), of the Archdiocese of Bari, died in 1961.
Especially, Father Francisco Barrecheguren Montagut, Spanish Redemptorist, (1881-1957) died in 1957. He was married, and after being widowed, became a priest. Her father's daughter, Maria de la Concepción Barrecheguren García (1905-1927), who died in 1927, at the age of 22, was also recognized for heroic virtues.
The above five Venerables, if miracles are recognized, will be beatified.
When announcing the above five decrees, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, said that because of the Covid-19 pandemic, there are five beatifications within the next two months, postponed to A date will be determined later, including Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, the late Polish Catholic Patriarch, scheduled for June 7 here.
Cardinal Becciu said beatifications cannot be celebrated online as is the case with regular Masses. He also said other beatification ceremonies could also be postponed. It was the local ecclesiastical communities that asked for such a postponement, as the canonization ceremony usually involves thousands of people and this is not possible in this time of pandemic.
