At 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, will preside on behalf of Pope Francis at the beatification ceremony of 12 murdered Redemptorist monks. due to hatred of the faith in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War.

The ceremony will take place at the cathedral of Santa María La Real de la Almueda in Madrid. Among the concelebrants with the Cardinal Prefect were Cardinal Carlos Osoro, the local Archbishop, Father Rogério Gomes, Superior General of the Redemptorists, and the local Provincial. Also present were the relatives as well as the places of origin of the martyrs.

Twelve Redemptorists are honored on the altar, including six priests and six brothers, from two communities of the order: one at the Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chamberi, and the other at the Basilica of Saint Miguel in Latina, both in the Archdiocese of Madrid.

They were murdered between July 20 and November 7, 1936.

At the top of the list of ordained priests is Father Vicente Renuncio Toribio born in 1876, ordained a priest in the Redemptorist Order in 1901, at the age of 25, devoted to the work of evangelization and education. He was the rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Madrid and was arrested in 1936. He was imprisoned from September 17 to November 7, when he was murdered. As he came out of his cell to be executed, he said: “I give my life for the brothers in Spain, for the whole Order, and for the unfortunate Spain.”

Among the six martyrs, Brother Nicesio Perez del Palomar Quincoces, was born in 1859 and joined the Redemptorists at the age of 32. Resolute in character and unwavering in faith, he lived in many of the congregation's communities, working in a variety of jobs, such as carpenter, gardener, beekeeper, bricklayer, and carpenter's director. On August 14, 1936, at the age of 77 and nearly blind, he and brother Gregorio Zugasti were captured by militiamen and killed two days later.
