The news stunned many of his fans in the Philippines and around the world.

Father Suarez, a Filipino member of the Congregation of the Companions of the Cross, was pronounced dead around 3pm Manila local time. If he were still alive, he would turn 53 years old on February 7.

Father Suarez's spokeswoman, Deedee Siytangco, said Father Suarez was playing in a tournament he organized for priests when he collapsed around 11am. “He defeated two priests before. But by the third match, he collapsed,” Ms. Siytangco said. He was immediately taken to the Asian hospital of the capital but did not survive.

This tournament includes 250 priests and 2 bishops, taking place in the village of Ayala Alabang, 28km southeast of Manila. All expenses are covered by Father Suarez and his sponsors.

Father Fernando Suarez is a famous priest in the Philippines. He is reported to have a healing gift and claims to have brought back a dead Canadian woman.

Father Fernando Suarez was born in 1967 in the village of Barrio Butong, Taal district, Batangas province. Mr. Suarez was born into a poor family. His father drove a tricycle and his mother was a seamstress. As the eldest of four children, from a young age, Mr. Suarez knew how to make a living. At the age of 12, he earned money to help his parents by renting floats at Butong beach.

Mr. Suarez earned a degree in chemical engineering from Adamson University. After graduating from university, he joined the Franciscan Conventual Order, but his religious life was full of hardships, so he dropped out. In 1995, a French-Canadian student named Mark Morin, seeing that he had a knack for business, invited him to Canada and paid for the ticket. At first, the two were linked in business activities, but Mr. Suarez wanted to pursue the priesthood. In 1997, he joined the Congregation of the Companions of the Cross, a newly formed community of priests and seminarians in Ottawa. He was ordained a priest in 2002 at the age of 35.

According to Father Suarez, at the age of 16, he saw a 60-year-old beggar woman paralyzed outside the Quiapo church. He asked her if she wanted him to pray for her, with the intention of comforting her. After an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be, the woman got up and walked away.

In Canada, when Suarez was still a seminarian, a Canadian woman who was declared dead eight hours earlier also opened her eyes again after he prayed for her.

From then on, rumors of Father Suarez having the gift of healing spread very quickly and in 2008 he returned to the Philippines to continue his healing ministry. He founded the group Mary Mother of the Poor, or Mary Mother of the Poor, or MMMP for short. Medically unexplainable cases of alleged healing are reported on the MMMP website.

The Masses celebrated by Father Suarez attracted a large number of lay people. However, so far at least four dioceses and archdioceses have banned Father Suarez from holding healing prayers in his area.

Explaining his decision to ban, Archbishop Oscar Cruz of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan said he could not believe Father Suarez had the ability to raise a person from the dead. “Only Jesus Christ can raise the dead,” he said.

However, the bishops had difficulty stopping Father Suarez after the owner of San Miguel Corp announced his wife was cured and in 2010 gifted the MMMP with a 33-hectare plot of land in the town. Amuyong, Alfonso District, in Cavite City. He also announced the construction of a 33-storey high statue of Our Lady of the Poor.

On January 6 of this year, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a decree declaring that the allegation that Father Fernando Suarez sexually abused a minor was unfounded. This decision is in response to a lawsuit filed with the Vatican on May 8, 2019.

The Philippine Bishops' Conference informed Father Suarez that he was given a decision by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. no crime.

The announcement made on the MMMP's Facebook page on January 9 explains that the verdict of not guilty means that Father Suarez is falsely accused of this crime and therefore nothing stands in his way. carry out his healing duties.

However, the bishops' conference stressed that his healing ministry must be carried out in accordance with the jurisdiction of the local ecclesiastical authority. The decision by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith only affirms his innocence in relation to allegations of child sex abuse, not a license to practice healing in the Philippines.
