New Ghanaian cardinal to receive heart surgery in Rome

A spokesman for the Ghana Episcopal Conference for Africa said Cardinal-elect Richard Kuuia Baawabr will undergo heart surgery later this week.

Cardinal Richard is 63, of the African Missionary Society, Bishop of Wa and President of the Federation of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar. He is widely known for his charity and interest in helping people with mental disabilities in a country with high discrimination against people with disabilities. Before becoming a bishop, he was Superior General of the African Missionary Society.

When he arrived in Rome to be ordained a cardinal, during the Synod on Saturday afternoon, August 27, he suffered a heart attack and was taken to the Holy Spirit hospital, Santo Spirito, near the Vatican, for emergency treatment. During his homily at the ordination ceremony, the Pope asked the faithful to pray for Cardinal Richard.

On August 31, Father Dieu-Donné Kofi Dabor, Communications Director of the Ghana Episcopal Conference, said that Cardinal Richard's surgery will take place this weekend and we are praying for him soon. recovered and returned to Ghana.
