The Archdiocese of New York has a new special priest, Father Tom Colucci, 60 years old, late last year, a former firefighter with the New York City Fire Department for 29 years.
September 11, 2001 changed Tom Colucci's life forever. He was the captain of the New York Fire Department.
That day, he watched his men die: dozens of lifeless bodies the result of a murderous frenzy, and the death of their chaplain, Father Mychal Judge, who had administering the Sacrament of Anointing to a firefighter.
Where was God that day?
“I saw the worst of humanity on that day, but I also saw the best of humanity on this day,” he said.
Tom remembers the hundreds of people - men, women and even children - who showed up in an effort to help the victims: “They are the body of Christ! God was certainly with us that day.”
Tom then decided to become a priest to continue serving and saving people, both body and soul.
Father Colucci's life story is a counter-story, a powerful and clear witness to how God is present even in the most dramatic moments of humanity.
