Grief: A nun was robbed and beaten and bruised on her face

A nun from the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Bangladesh was attacked and wounded by a Muslim robber.

Asia News reported on August 25, 2021 that Sister Scolastica Jopomala Gomes, teaches at St. Joseph's School in Bonpara, 6 kilometers from the monastery in Sreeghonti. When riding a cyclo to her house, when she got off the bus, someone tried to cut her hand.

When she resisted, the robber punched her in the eye and escaped with a cell phone, a watch and some money.

Jesuit priest Joseph Mistri, parish priest in Bhabanipur, said Sister Gomes suffered a serious eye injury, and after reporting the matter to the local police, she was transported to the capital, Dhaka, for treatment.

Bishop Gernas Rozario, Bishop of Rajsthani Diocese, told Asia News: "This case makes me very sad and has asked the police to pursue the robber to ensure justice."

There are many assaults against Christians in Bangladesh, especially in cases against monks and missionaries.

In 1998, a missionary school in the ancient city of Dhaka was attacked by a group of Islamic extremists who wanted to take over Church land. In 2001, at least 10 Catholics were killed and more than 50 others injured, in a bombing in the parish of Gopalganj.

In 2015, some elements of the Islamic State shot an Italian missionary, Father Piero Parolani, a doctor, seriously injuring him. In 2018, Sister Madeline, a member of Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, was stabbed while returning home from a bank in Moulvibazar.
